CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Eva tried to hide her nervousness when Jim arrived for dinner. She was hopeful a good meal and either a couple bottles of beer or glasses of wine would loosen things up enough that Jim would be more receptive to her revelation she had conversations with animals.

“Something smells good,” Jim said as he let himself in and walked into the kitchen. He held up a small duffel bag. “I brought my extra clothes. If you can show me where I should put them, I’ll get them out of the way.”

“As a matter of fact, I can. Follow me.”

After putting the clothes in the designated drawer and his toothbrush in the bathroom, they walked back to the kitchen.

“We haven’t had lasagna for a while, so I cooked up a batch and made the sauce from scratch. You’re welcome to help yourself to the leftovers if you want to take some home with you tomorrow. I’ll put in some salad and garlic bread, too. Can I get you a glass of wine to start out while the lasagna finishes cooking, or maybe a beer?”

“What are you drinking?”

“I’m going to have a glass of wine.”

“That’s what I’ll have, too, then. Do you need it opened?”

Eva handed him the bottle of wine and a corkscrew and put out two wine glasses, which Jim filled and put on the table to breathe while Eva finished up her cooking duties. The oven timer went off, and she pulled out the lasagna, which she placed on the counter and replaced it with a loaf of garlic bread.

“That should be done in about ten to fifteen minutes, but we can start with the salad.”

She took the salad out of the refrigerator and put it on the dining room table, which she’d set earlier and decorated with a bouquet of flowers picked from her garden. She’d considered lighting a candle, but thought it might be too much. A romantic evening wasn’t her primary purpose for the dinner, and she didn’t want to give Jim the wrong impression.

“This looks really nice, Eva,” Jim said as he looked at the tableau she had arranged. “Did I forget it’s our anniversary?” he asked, teasing, but Eva knew he was only half-kidding.

“No, no, don’t get yourself all worried. I do have that thing I want to talk to you about, but let’s enjoy our wine and dinner.”

“It still sounds serious. Should I be worried?”

“Let’s hope not. I am a little nervous about how to bring it up and I’m hoping you won’t go running for the hills after you’ve heard what I have to tell you. I might have information about Sadie Emerson’s murder.”

Jim looked up from his salad in surprise at Eva’s announcement.

“Really? How did you hear about it?”

“Well, that’s what I’m nervous about. How I got the information is, well… unorthodox might be the way to describe it.” She took a sip of her wine, both to give herself time to think about what she wanted to say next and some liquid courage.
